The Series Early Icelandic Manuscripts in Facsimile contains facsimiles of the most important Icelandic manuscripts in original size, and each volume includes an introduction in English by a highly skilled specialist. Literature of medieval Iceland is the most precious jewel in the cultural inheritance of the Northern countries, and may also be justifiably regarded as the most important monument of the ancient common culture of Germanic peoples. The first volume published in the series was Manuscript No. 122 A Fol. in the Arnamagnæan Collection Sturlunga Saga edited by Jakob Benediktsson, published as volume I in 1958. It was the first General Editor of the series Professor Jón Helgason, Arnamagnæan Institute, Copenhagen and the members of the Editorial board, Professor Sigurdur Nordal, Reykjavik, Professor Dag Strömbäck, Uppsala and Professor Magnus Olsen, Oslo who made it possible to start the series.
